FAQ's
What are KuneKune pigs?
KuneKunes are a small breed of pig from New Zealand, their name quite literally means "fat and round" in Maori. Kunes come in many different colours ranging from black, ginger, brown, white and spotted and are characterized by their hairy, often curly coat, short snout and wattles (but not always!). They are an extremely amicable breed and are very easy to keep with other livestock.
What makes the meat so different than grocery store pork?
Because KuneKune pigs are a true grazing breed they take significantly longer to grow out than commercial breeds, approximately 18 months to be ready for processing, but because the majority of their diet is pasture and hay this means the meat is higher in Omega-3 fatty acids and rich flavour. This does take a considerable amount of management, pasture rotation, fencing investment and space including accommodating for winter needs.
What should I expect from the meat?
As a smaller breed pig, typically 150-200lbs at processing, you can expect that the cuts will be smaller but what they lack in size they make up for in flavour! Because kunes convert grass to lard so well, you will notice a good covering of fat but don't cut that off - it's where so much of the richness is and will add a beautiful taste to the well marbled, darker meat. Sausage is a very popular way to enjoy the meat and our butcher, J-Mar Meats, are masters at seasoning and curing! We offer side bacon, sausages, pork chops and fresh hams - what are fresh hams you ask? Well, they are a bone in roast like the pink smoked meat you think of with traditional ham, but without the curing, this means you can flavour it up with any manner of spice and let the thick covering of fat create a tender juicy roast.
How do I get some?!
We don't have a store front nor can you find our products in markets but we are happy to make arrangements for you to pick up at our farm. The meat is inspected, vacuum packed, labelled and flash frozen at J-Mar Meats in Mount Forest which is a government approved facility and returns here to Glenaura for storage and pick up. We have fulfilled our whole hog orders for this year and will be taking reservations for 2025/2026 but we have lots of individual cuts to keep you well fed!
